AI Services Test Coverage
Overview
This document describes the comprehensive test coverage created for the AI intelligence system following the major architectural refactoring that removed the journal entry system and replaced it with direct field progress data generation.
Test Files Created
1. IntelligenceServiceTest.php
Location: tests/Unit/Services/IntelligenceServiceTest.php
Coverage: 15 test cases covering the main intelligence generation service
Test Groups:
generateForField Tests:
- Successfully generates intelligence when all dependencies are met
- Throws exception when no dependent fields are configured
- Throws exception when configured dependent fields are not found
- Throws exception when dependencies are not met
- Passes custom prompt from field meta to OpenAI
- Passes reasoning effort parameter correctly
- Defaults reasoning effort to minimal when not specified
buildPromptPreview Tests:
- Builds prompt preview without calling OpenAI API
- Includes field progress in preview
Field Structure Analysis Tests:
- Properly separates parent and child fields
- Handles standalone fields without array parents
Message Construction Tests:
- Creates single user message for reasoning models (GPT-5 family)
- Creates system and user messages for non-reasoning models
- Includes organisation context in messages
Error Handling Tests:
- Throws exception when AI prompt not found
2. OpenAiServiceTest.php
Location: tests/Unit/Services/OpenAiServiceTest.php
Coverage: 12+ test cases covering OpenAI API integration
Test Groups:
generateCompletion Tests:
- Successfully generates completion with default parameters
- Passes custom model, temperature, and max_tokens
- Uses max_completion_tokens for GPT-5 family
- Removes temperature for GPT-5 family (not supported)
- Logs usage for successful API calls
- Skips logging when user_id is not provided
generateStrategicAnalysis Tests:
- Generates strategic analysis with field progress context
- Uses model override when provided
generateElementOverview Tests:
- Generates element overview with correct prompt slug
Cost Calculation Tests:
- Calculates cost using OpenAiModel enum
- Uses fallback pricing for unknown models
3. ElementAnalysisServiceTest.php
Location: tests/Unit/Services/ElementAnalysisServiceTest.php
Coverage: 13+ test cases covering strategic analysis and overview generation
Test Groups:
generateElementStrategicAnalysis Tests:
- Generates and stores strategic analysis with field progress
- Returns null when no field progress exists
- Uses model override when provided
- Throws exception for invalid model override
- Updates existing analysis record
- Returns null and logs error on exception
generateElementOverview Tests:
- Generates and stores element overview with field progress
- Returns null when no field progress exists
- Uses model override when provided
- Updates existing overview record
- Returns null and logs error on exception
Retrieval Tests:
- getElementStrategicAnalysis retrieves existing analysis
- Returns null when no analysis exists
- Returns correct analysis for specific organisation
- getElementOverview retrieves existing overview
- Returns correct overview for specific organisation
4. FieldResourceTest.php
Location: tests/Unit/Http/Resources/FieldResourceTest.php
Coverage: 16+ test cases covering field progress formatting for AI context
Test Groups:
getContextForIntelligence Tests:
- Formats standalone fields correctly
- Formats fields without subtitle correctly
- Handles array parent fields with child progresses
- Skips parent fields that are shown with children
- Includes field IDs for reference
- Returns empty string for empty collection
- Handles progresses without field relationship
- Formats array values correctly
getContextForElementOverview Tests:
- Formats field progress for overview
- Handles multiple fields with proper separation
- Returns empty string for empty collection
- Filters out progresses without fields
getContextForElementAnalysis Tests:
- Formats field progress for strategic analysis
- Uses same format as overview
Value Formatting Tests:
- Formats single string values
- Formats array values as bullet points
- Shows placeholder for empty values
- Filters out empty items from array values
- Shows placeholder for empty array
Key Testing Patterns
Mocking Strategy
- Uses Mockery for mocking OpenAI client responses
- Mocks service dependencies to isolate unit tests
- Uses PHPUnit mocks for complex service mocking
Database Strategy
- Uses RefreshDatabase trait for clean state
- Creates realistic test data with factories
- Tests both empty and populated states
Known Issue Fixed
- OrganisationObserver Meta Array Issue: Fixed issue where creating Organisation with
metaas array caused observer error. Now sets meta as stdClass object in tests.

Next Steps
- Run tests to ensure they all pass

- Tests use Pest PHP testing framework (v2)
- All tests follow the existing codebase conventions
- Mocking prevents actual OpenAI API calls during testing
